Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease that affects the macula, the central part of your retina. This part of the eye processes what you see directly in front of you. We rely on the macula for many daily tasks, such as reading, driving, writing, and watching TV.

There are two types of macular degeneration: dry and wet. Dry macular degeneration is more common and progresses slowly, while wet macular degeneration can cause rapid and severe vision loss. During your comprehensive eye exam at Bella Vista Family Eye Care, our experienced eye doctor will carefully examine your retina for any signs of macular degeneration using advanced diagnostic tools. Early detection is key in managing AMD, so it’s important to schedule regular eye exams if you’re at risk or have a family history of the condition.

Genetic testing for AMD

One of the key services we offer at Bella Vista Family Eye Care is genetic testing for macular degeneration. This cutting-edge test can help determine your risk for developing the disease and guide the treatment options we recommend. By identifying specific genetic markers associated with macular degeneration, we can provide targeted care to help preserve your vision and overall eye health.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

Currently, there are no treatment options available for dry AMD. Research has shown, however, that certain supplements containing vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthin, may slow down the progression of the disease. Dr. Jackson can provide guidance on which supplements may be beneficial for your specific case. We offer MacuHealth, a supplement that contains all three essential carotenoids for optimal macular pigment density. These supplements contain a unique combination of vitamins and minerals that have been shown to improve vision and reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration.

We also offer carotenoid evaluations using the Pharmanex S3 BioPhotonic Scanner. This innovative technology measures the levels of antioxidants in your system. Dr. Jackson can then provide recommendations on how to improve your overall eye health and reduce your risk of developing late-stage macular degeneration.

If you develop wet AMD, which is always late-stage AMD, symptoms usually appear suddenly and worsen quickly. Fortunately, treatments such as photodynamic therapy, laser surgery, and anti-VEGF injections can prevent vision loss. Dr. Jackson can assess your vision and eye health and recommend the best treatment for you.
